For the first time in more than 30 years, one of the world’s finest orchestras returns to Australia, led by Russia’s greatest living conductor Valery Gergiev.

Description

The London Symphony Orchestra (LSO) makes its highly anticipated return to Australia's iconic Sydney Opera House for a three concert series, under the baton of its Principal Conductor maestro Valery Gergiev. The Opera House will welcome the LSO as part of the World Orchestra Program which gives Sydney audiences the opportunity to experience the skill and artistry of the greatest ensembles live. With the LSO comes the exceptionally talented pianist Denis Matsuev playing music from the passionate cultural heart of Russia.

Formed in 1904, the London Symphony Orchestra has become an icon in the world of classical music. The roll call of its conductors reads as a who's who of the legendary maestros including Sir Simon Rattle, Andre Previn, Michael Tilson Thomas, Sir Edward Elgar and the late great Claudio Abbado and Sir Colin Davis.  The places it has appeared, the works it has played, the great artists who have performed with this illustrious band almost tells a history of the twentieth-century in music. Its work in the recording studio and playing on movie soundtracks (including Harry Potter  and The King's Speech)  make it perhaps the most listened to orchestra in history.

You've almost certainly heard the London Symphony Orchestra in the cinema and on TV, but unless you have heard this ensemble live, in glorious technicolor, you're missing out. It will be an experience you will never forget.

PROGRAMME ONE
Old Russia meets new in programme one, with music by Prokofiev and Stravinsky. Prokofiev's First Symphony, the 'Classical', is a fond and fabulous look at eighteenth-century music through the prism of twentieth-century Europe. In the Fifth Symphony we hear an older, wiser Prokofiev contemplating the indomitable nobility of the human spirit. Meanwhile, Petrushka, Stravinsky's fairground folk story, is a dance suite with a spooky sting in its tale.

PROKOFIEV Symphony No. 1
STRAVINSKY Petrushka  (1947)
Interval
PROKOFIEV Symphony No. 5

VALERY GERGIEV
Principal Conductor

"It felt for all the world as if the music were being emitted directly by the mysterious shimmering of the conductor's fingertips." The Guardian (UK), 2013

He's been described as 'volatile', 'driven' and 'possessed'. He conducts with a toothpick and a feverish shiver of the hands. He's renowned for taking risks to find unexpected insights into classic works. Valery Gergiev is one of the world's most electrifying musical personalities.
