On Saturday 23 August, Sydney's arts community join together to pay tribute to a loyal supporter of the arts – the outgoing Governor of NSW, Her Excellency Professor The Honourable Dame Marie Bashir AD CVO.

Her Excellency will be retiring on 1 October 2014 and the Sydney Opera House is proud to play host to a stunning celebration of Dame Marie Bashir’s lifelong dedication to the Arts with the Marie Bashir Farewell Musical Tribute.

The tribute concert is being supported by several leading performing arts companies and will feature:

• Opera Australia’s Teddy Tahu Rhodes (This was nearly mine from Rodgers and Hammerstein’s South Pacific), Emma Matthews (Squallida veste, e bruna from Rossini’s Il turco in Italia) and Natalie Aroyan (“Micaela's Aria” from Bizet’s Carmen);
• The Sydney Symphony Orchestra performing the final two movements of Brahms’s Symphony No 2, led by chief conductor David Robertson;
• The Australian Brandenburg Orchestra led by Paul Dyer AO in a collaboration with singer/songwriter Marcus Corowa, and a performance by the Brandenburg Choir;
• A music and dance collaboration from Moa Island, in the Torres Strait, presented by Musica Viva & NAISDA Dance College;
• Sydney Children’s Choir, part of Gondwana Choirs performing "Shall we Dream” composed by Michael Atherton and "Out There" composed by Dan Walker;
• The Australian Ballet performing Pas de deux from After The Rain © (2005), choreography by Christopher Wheeldon, music by Arvo Pärt, featuring dancers Robyn Hendricks and Rudy Hawkes and Gavin Lockley (Tenor) & Renae Martin (Soprano);
• Bernadette Robinson performing “Piaf/Garland Medley” with Paul Noonan (piano);
• Gavin Lockley performing “There is a Lady Sweet and Kind’, poem by Thomas Ford, featuring Renae Martin (Soprano) and Anthony Legge (pianoforte); and
• ABC Classic FM’s Damien Beaumont as the Master of Ceremonies.

In addition to her distinguished service as Governor and many achievements in psychiatry and indigenous health in the course of her medical career, Professor Bashir has been a tireless advocate for the arts. She is a patron of Opera Australia, the Sydney Symphony Orchestra, Sydney Philharmonia Choirs and Sydney Youth Orchestra.

Proceeds from ticket sales will be donated to two organisations close to Professor Bashir’s heart: the Wayside Chapel in Kings Cross; and Father Chris Riley’s Youth Off the Streets.
