Description

This is Stravinsky in a lyrical mood and Felix Mendelssohn makes a perfect partner. You can hear Arabella Steinbacher as the soloist in the most enchanting violin concerto ever written.

Stravinsky’s ballet The Rite of Spring was the starting point for this concert. It’s exactly one hundred years old in 2013, but its fierce rhythms and mesmerising sounds seem as fresh as if they’d been invented yesterday.

Charles Dutoit has paired The Rite with The Song of the Nightingale – fantastic music based on a Hans Christian Andersen fairytale. In The Song of the Nightingale the glittering artifice of a mechanical bird rivals the languid beauty of the real nightingale, and the glamour of the Chinese Emperor’s court finds contrast in the humble hut of a fisherman.

This is Stravinsky in a lyrical mood and Felix Mendelssohn makes a perfect partner. You can hear Arabella Steinbacher as the soloist in the most enchanting violin concerto ever written.
