Mozart’s ‘Jupiter’ Symphony and The Magic Flute - two of his most popular works, with conductor Jessica Cottis.

Description

The ‘Jupiter’ nickname for Mozart’s great Symphony No.41 suggests ancient myths and powerful characters. The Magic Flute is an invented mythology that sends its hero into weird and dangerous worlds. And inbetween, hear a brand new Double Bass concerto.

Mozart has been inspiring composers from more than 200 years. And while Mary Finsterer’s new double bass concerto won’t sound like Mozart, it has been influenced by the music in this concert. Finsterer loves a commission that gives her a chance to compose for a particular context – she’s no stranger to film music, for example – and this concert has prompted her to explore long-held fascinations.

The ‘Jupiter’ nickname for Mozart’s great Symphony No.41 suggests ancient myths and powerful characters. The Magic Flute is an invented mythology that sends its hero into mysterious and dangerous worlds.

From this comes Finsterer’s own invented myth. Lake Ice, a concerto for the formidable talents of Sydney Symphony musician Kees Boersma evoking the primordial cold at the beginning of creation. Imagine ice and mist, fire and steam…
