Patyegarang was a young woman of intense and enduring courage, a proud spirit, an educator and visionary - an inspiration today for respect of Aboriginal knowledge and language.

Expressed in the beauty of Stephen Page's distinctive choreography, Patyegarang celebrates Bangarra's unique ability to tell stories through the prism of our contemporary experience, enriched by our shared history.

Embracing the spirit of her perspective on history, Page imagines the journey of Patyegarang who gifted to one of the colonists her language, her time and her friendship.

The audience is transported to another time and place to experience the sensations and emotions of 'first contact' - creating a remarkable narrative dance work that tells the story of an astonishing act of generosity and cultural exchange.

Patyegarang guided Lieutenant William Dawes to understand the deep, spiritual significance of Aboriginal ancestors, myths and creation stories, now celebrated in this new dance theatre work by Bangarra.
