Using Shakespearean iambic pentameter, students will learn the basic skills needed to begin writing dramatic hip-hop verse. Students will explore the tropes of hip-hop culture, rhyme and rhythm structures and experiment with mood, voice, and character.

This masterclass will include an overview of the history of lyrical evolution in hip-hop culture, with examples from various well-known artists, followed by a writing exercise in which participants learn to write their own original rap lyrics from a character or persona's point of view.

The class will culminate in a performance "cypher" in which participants share their creations.
