Hear Beethoven's first two piano concertos - youthful virtuosity to begin our Beethoven Piano Concerto festival.

Description

Beethoven at his Classical best. His Piano Concerto No.2 is sunny and playful in a way that calls to mind Mozart and Haydn. The bright and joyful Piano Concerto No.1 was the young composer's showpiece - devilish passages and a dreamy adagio, under the direction of David Robertson and featuring pianist Emanuel Ax.

In June, David Robertson and Emanuel Ax present the complete Beethoven piano concertos - your chance to hear all five concertos, from first to last.

The piano concertos follow Beethoven's trajectory from bold, young composer-virtuoso to a towering figure in 19th-century music - a game changer. In this concert the energy and confidence of Piano Concerto No.2 is followed by the even more ambitious Concerto No.1 with its festive spirit. You can imagine the composer himself, showing off at the keyboard!

David Robertson begins the concert with another relatively youthful work: brilliant and expressive music by Paul Hindemith.

This performance is part of the entire Beethoven cycle of Piano Concertos 1-5 the Sydney Symphony Orchestra will be performing in 2014.
