BRAHMS & ELGAR: ROMANTIC MASTERPIECES

10 July 2014 – 12 July 2014

Venue: Concert Hall  View Seat Map
Presented by: Sydney Symphony

Sydney first saw young Czech conductor Jakub Hrůša when he jumped in at short notice, saving the day in 2012. Now he returns with two great works that are expansive in spirit and Romantic at heart.

Description

Brahms begins the program with dances borrowed from Hungarian folk music and dressed up in orchestral colours by his protégé Antonín Dvořák. And gives us a mighty and thrilling conclusion with his Fourth Symphony.

Truls Mørk, the leading cellist of his generation, returns to Sydney with the Elgar's nostalgic Cello Concerto - profoundly moving in its depth of emotion, glowing with melancholy beauty. As the Sydney Morning Herald said in 2005, "Truls Mørk plays with an almost perfect cello sound -- smooth, rich and of noble strength and bearing."

Please note that this program has changed since it was originally advertised. Earlier this year Truls Mørk suffered a minor injury and while he is very much improved he has had to re-address the number of pieces he is performing at one time. For this reason he has had to make the change from the Dvořák cello concerto to the Elgar cello concerto.

The program listing:

  • BRAHMS orch. Dvořák Five Hungarian Dances
  • ELGAR Cello Concerto
  • BRAHMS Symphony No.4
