David Robertson pairs the autumnal sounds of Richard Strauss's final creation with the sunny Second Symphony of Brahms.

Description

Christine Brewer returns to perform Strauss's extraordinary Four Last Songs - soar ecstatically into oblivion on the rich orchestral colours and vocal wings of these majestic songs. Then Brahms shifts the mood with the expansive Second Symphony, under the direction of our new Chief Conductor David Robertson.

Four Last Songs  is late Strauss - you can take the title literally. One theme is death, but the attitude is calm and resigned. Christine Brewer, who sang Wagner with us in 2012, returns to perform these noble and refined songs, deftly coloured with rich orchestral sounds.

Then Brahms brings the sunshine back into the concert hall with his Second Symphony. It's an ecstatic shift of mood, with so many melodies you have to be careful not to step on one!

Against these Romantic highlights, David Robertson sets a new work by Detlev Glanert, who claims two polar opposites as influences: Mahler and Ravel.

GLANERT  Frenesia
R STRAUSS  Four Last Songs
BRAHMS  Symphony No.2
