A night of musical contrasts with a seriously charming organ concerto for a Paris soirée and Mahler's Seventh Symphony, which glides through nocturnal worlds from dusk till dawn.

Description

David Drury will bring the Sydney Opera House organ to life performing Poulenc's playfully profound Organ Concerto. Then take a journey through supernatural realms, with new orchestral colours giving way to a sunrise finale in Mahler's Symphony No.7 under the direction of Jonathan Nott.

'Charming Monsieur Poulenc' visits the cloister in his Organ Concerto, blending fashionable elegance and lightness of touch with a reflective, spiritual tone that brings to mind the music of Bach. It's as if two sides of the composer's personality have come together for music that can be sprightly, shimmering, grand or devotional. And the organ truly shines: it's the only 'wind' instrument in the company of strings and kettledrums.

After the interval, you'll come back to a full stage: one hundred musicians to play Mahler's most intriguing symphony of all. Experience the Romantic imagination at play, and enter a world of ghosts and fairytales, nostalgia and night-time serenades. Over the course of 80 minutes, Mahler will terrify you, make you laugh, seduce you and lift your spirit.
