Brahms's Third Symphony gives the impression of having been 'created in the flush of an inspired hour'. And David Robertson has put this idyllic symphony at the top of the concert so its transcendent ending will take you into the interval on a high.

It's probably just as well that Lalo is on the other side of the interval, because he didn't like Brahms at all. What he did admire was the grace and refinement of the great Spanish violinist Sarasate, and this toe-tapping 'Spanish symphony' is dedicated to him. Here symphonic inspiration has led to what is basically a concerto, with the violin soaring above the form of a symphony. The concert ends with a 'little symphony' that will bring the full strength of the SSO and a dozen extra trumpets onto the stage for exultant fanfares!

BRAHMS  Symphony No.3
LALO  Symphonie espagnole for violin and orchestra
JANÁČEK  Sinfonietta
