The Austrian clarinetist Andreas Ottensamer has captivated audiences and critics alike with the singular beauty of tone that he coaxes from the instrument. Warm, polished and dark, the clarinet has one of the most beguiling voices in the orchestra.

Ottensamer is Principal Clarinet of the Berlin Philharmonic,a positioned earned after the hard graft of practice, competitions and extensive chamber music work. He happens to have worked with the very best in the business though: Yo-Yo Ma and Murray Perahia to name just two. With his movie star good looks (why deny it?) and extraordinary talent, he's a star in the ascendant.

The clarinet's versatility has made it the favourite of audiences from the Classical period to the jazz clubs of today. The Romantic period saw a great outflow of virtuoso showpieces, where the vocal qualities of the clarinet are exploited to stunning effect. In the 20th century, Francis Poulenc's sonata looks deep into the instrument's soul, finding tears as well as laughter. And of course, no clarinet recital would be complete without Gershwin's fascinating rhythms and cheeky slides.

Repertoire:
CIMAROSA (arr. Benjamin)
Clarinet concerto
PENDEREKI Three miniatures
DEBUSSY (arr. Koncz) La fille
aux cheveux de lin

POULENC Clarinet sonata
HOROVITZ Sonatina
BEACH (arr. Koncz) Berceuse
TEMPLETONPocket-size
Sonata No.2

GERSHWIN (arr. Koncz)
Prelude No.1

Artist Information

From Yarmila (Utzon Music Series Curator):

Andreas makes his third visit to Australia in 2014 to perform
in the Utzon Music Series. I am delighted that we have managed to woo back such an exceptional musician who led the largest master class ever seen at the Sydney Conservatorium earlier in 2013 (students queued down to Macquarie Street), and starred with the Berlin Phil in the Concert Hall back in 2010 (literally the best nights of my life)! Such a versatile and dedicated artist who enjoys performing in orchestras, in chamber ensembles and as a soloist is always welcome at the Opera House.

Reviews

"Ottensamer is a superb clarinettist with not only a wonderful tone, but a rather special way in which he articulates and moulds phrases." The Classical Reviewer
