Description
Ian Bostridge – The Poetry of Heinrich Heine
Ian Bostridge is a master of German lied…the singing was warm and beautiful, the phrases arching in true bel canto style…many, including the performers, weren’t quite ready for it to end. San Francisco Classical Voice
Ian Bostridge is a Renaissance man. He made his operatic debut in Edinburgh in 1994 at the age of 29. His role? Lysander in Baz Luhrmann’s legendary production of Britten’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream for Opera Australia. Not so unusual until you realise he was also a university academic at the time, juggling post-doctoral studies in history and philosophy at Oxford University with a runaway singing career. Happily for us, music won out, although he still writes and lectures.
Bostridge performs the music of two dear friends, Schumann and Brahms, in a program unified by another great love, words. Heinrich Heine is one of the most significant poets of the nineteenth-century and his verse has inspired generations of composers from Mendelssohn to Richard Strauss. Now, via Schumann, Brahms and Ian Bostridge, they will inspire you.
What does it take to be a great lieder singer? A fabulous voice, impeccable musical instincts, and the intellect to engage with the poetry’s finely nuanced text? It goes without saying that Ian Bostridge has all this plus a natural, unaffected sensibility, a kind of in-built nostalgia, which makes him an ideal artist to interpret these exquisite songs of longing.
This is Ian Bostridge’s Australian debut, and his only appearance in Sydney.
SCHUMANN
Liederkreis Op. 24
Morgens steh' ich auf und frage
Es treibt mich hin
Ich wandelte unter den Bäumen
Lieb' Liebchen
Schöne Wiege meiner Leiden
Warte, warte wilder Schiffsmann
Berg' und Burgen schaun herunter
Anfangs wollt ich fast verzagen
Mit Myrten und Rosen

Lehn deine Wang Op 142 No.2
Es Leuchtet meine Liebe Op 127 No.3
Mein Wagen rollet langsam Op 142 No.4
BRAHMS
Nine Lieder Op 32
Wie rafft ich mich auf in der Nacht
Nicht mehr zu mir zu gehen
Ich schleich umher
Der Storm, der neben mir verrauschte
Wehe, so willst du mich wieder
Du sprichst, dass ich mich täuschte
Bitteres zu sagen denkst du
So stehn wir, ich und meine Welde

Mondenschein Op 85 No.2
Meerfahrt Op 96 No.4
Der Tod, das ist die kuehle Nacht Op 96 No.1
