Wang was a master luminist, drawing complex shades out of each chord…sparkling trills, purling runs, and such a warm vibrato in every register. Washington Post
The glowing warmth and noble beauty of the solo cello is a perfect match for the ideal acoustics and stunning setting of the Utzon Room.
This is why the solo cello recital has become something of a tradition in the Utzon Music Series. So it is with great pleasure that we welcome one of the world’s favourite cellists to play Bach.
When he was just a child Jian Wang’s father fashioned a tiny cello for him made from a violin with a stick tied to the back for a spike. The youngster took to it with joy, and when he was nine won a place at the Shanghai Conservatory. A year later, in 1979, he caught the eye of violin virtuoso Isaac Stern and the rest, as they say, is history.
Jian Wang is now a star, a soloist much in demand with the great orchestras of the world. He has made many visits to our shores, most recently appearing as a soloist with the Sydney Symphony, but he has yet to play here in such an intimate setting. What a treat then, to experience the rich, chocolatey tone and insightful interpretations of Bach’s solo cello suites, from someone who was simply born to play.
