Sydney Opera House partners with Starlight Children's Foundation

Sydney – Monday 28 August, 2017. The Sydney Opera House today announced a partnership with the Starlight Children’s Foundation (Starlight) to help brighten the lives of seriously ill children and their families across Australia. Facilitated by professional actors, storytellers and guides, the Creative Collaborations partnership connects children and their families from multiple Starlight Express Rooms around Australia with the Sydney Opera House through interactive live-stream technology.

The Creative Collaborations partnership spans a variety of digital experiences, from virtual tours of the Opera House and live streams of Opera House kids shows to Staging Stories, a masterclass on storytelling.

The collaboration will be piloted at children’s hospitals around Australia from August to November this year.

National Manager of Creative Collaborations at Starlight, Jonathan Kirkham, says: ‘There’s a Starlight Express Room in every children’s hospital in Australia. These bright treatment-free havens are filled with fun, music, games and sometimes even balloon animals on the loose! The Sydney Opera House’s Staging Stories provides another positive distraction from the fear and the pain, and helps sick kids build resilience and develop self-esteem.’

Sydney Opera House Head of Children, Families and Creative Learning, Bridgette Van Leuven, says: ‘We are incredibly proud to collaborate with Starlight. It is truly a delight to bring the joys, imagination and creativity of the Sydney Opera House to children who otherwise might not be able to visit us.”
