Sydney – Monday 3 July 2017. The Sydney Opera House today announced that it will host the Sydney premiere screening of Academy-Award® winning writer/director Jane Campion’s crime mystery Top of the Lake: China Girl – on Tuesday August 1.
Fresh from its critically-acclaimed international premiere at Festival De Cannes 2017 – one of only two television series to ever premiere at the prestigious event – the Sydney Opera House will screen episodes 1 & 2 of Top of the Lake: China Girl in the Drama Theatre, followed by a live and exclusive Q&A session with writer and director Jane Campion, director Ariel Kleiman (Partisan) and Campion’s co-writer Gerard Lee. Produced by See-Saw Films for BBC First and Foxtel in Australia, the series will air on BBC First later this winter.
The new instalment of the Emmy® and Golden Globe® nominated mini-series, Top of the Lake stars Elisabeth Moss (Madmen, Truth) reprising her Golden Globe® winning role, Gwendoline Christie (Game of Thrones, Star Wars: The Force Awakens) and Nicole Kidman (Big Little Lies, The Hours, Moulin Rouge!). The cast also includes David Dencik (Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy, The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo), Alice Englert (Beautiful Creatures, Jonathan Strange and Mr Norrell) and Ewen Leslie (The Daughter).
Sydney Opera House Head of Contemporary Performance, Danielle Harvey, says: “Jane Campion is a masterful storyteller presenting unique and human stories for the screen. It’s an honour to host this event as part of the Opera House’s Contemporary Performance program – a home for visionary storytelling in popular culture. We look forward to premiering the new series and welcoming the creatives, cast and crew of Top of the Lake: China Girl to our stages in conversation for this special event.”
Top of the Lake: China Girl is a crime mystery story that finds Detective Robin Griffin (Elisabeth Moss) recently returned to Sydney and trying to rebuild her life. When the body of an Asian girl washes up on Bondi Beach, there appears little hope of finding the killer, until Robin discovers ‘China Girl’ didn’t die alone. Robin’s search will take her into the city's darkest recesses and closer than she could have imagined to the secrets of her own heart.
The six-part season is produced by Philippa Campbell (Rain, Top of the Lake season one) and Libby Sharpe (Jewboy). Executive producers are Campion with See-Saw’s Emile Sherman and Iain Canning (Lion, The King’s Speech).
