Sydney - Monday 6 March, 2017. Renowned Australian chamber musicians, the Australia Piano Quartet (APQ), return to the Sydney Opera House to perform a dynamic series of recitals on 10 June, 27 August and 10 December.
In a mesmerising display of flawless technique, the quartet will revive enduring masterpieces, unearth forgotten piano quartet pieces and perform new commissioned works by Australian composers.
Australia Piano Quartet Founding Artistic Director and Cellist Thomas Rann says, "Our performances in the Utzon Room have become a real highlight of our annual program. From debut platform to regular Sydney venue, the Utzon Room is now a familiar and intimate stage where APQ can engage in a direct and personal dialogue with our audiences - in the only venue at the Opera House with a view!
"In keeping with our commitment to present the best of new Australian chamber music, in 2017 we unveil some very exciting world premiere commissions, alongside beloved masterworks and long neglected gems. Do join us for our fourth season of Utzon Room recitals presented by the Sydney Opera House.”
The APQ premieres two major works for audiences, from the prodigious Jack Symonds (Director, Sydney Chamber Opera), and esteemed veteran Ross Edwards.
Alongside these vibrant new works, the APQ explores a rich repertoire of masterpieces by Brahms and Fauré, together with a youthful Beethoven quartet. In a Mystic Voyage, audiences are introduced to Russian genius Sergei Taneyev, an unjustly neglected contemporary of Tchaikovsky, and teacher of Prokofiev.
Sydney Opera House Director of Performing Arts Tim Calnin says, “This series of concerts by the Australia Piano Quartet gives audiences a chance to see elite Australian musicians in the most intimate performance space at the Opera House – the Utzon Room – treasured by audiences and performers alike.”
Recent Australia Piano Quartet performance highlights include their Wigmore Hall and Barbican Centre debuts (London), a residency at Shanghai University, live broadcasts for BBC Radio 3 and Foxtel Arts (as part of the Helpmann Awards).
Complementing their Sydney Opera House season in the Utzon Room, the Australia Piano Quartet will also perform in two concerts at Melbourne Recital Centre.
