Sydney Opera House appoints new Senior Contemporary Music Producer

Sydney - Monday 20 February, 2017.  Sydney producer Alister Hill joins the Contemporary Music team this week as Senior Producer, working under Ben Marshall, Head of Contemporary Music to produce the year-round Contemporary Music program.

“I think Alister is one of the most talented young music programmers and producers in Australia,” said Marshall. “Over his time with us he has materially contributed to our Music program through significant moments like Dead Can Dance and The Drones’ Wait Long By the River 20th anniversary. I’m genuinely thrilled that he’s agreed to take up the important and ongoing role of Senior Producer of Contemporary Music.

Alister began working with the Opera House for Vivid LIVE 2012 as Artistic Associate under Festival Director Fergus Linehan and went on to produce the festival in Ben Marshall’s first year as Curator in 2015. With this, he introduced the Opera House to an unearthed side of Sydney’s blooming music scene: paying homage to Inner West vinyl obsessives Repressed Records with rock heroes Royal Headache, bringing club veterans Astral People to the infamous Studio Parties, and overseeing sunset Future Classic concerts on the harbourside Northern Broadwalk. Alister also produced ‘Since I Left You’, a celebration of The Avalanches featuring Jonti and friends. Sydneysiders may recognise Alister’s voice from FBi Radio’s Sleepless in Sydney show with Marcus Whale (BV, Collarbones).

Last year, Alister also produced the inaugural MAD SYD in collaboration with René Redzepi’s international food organisation, MAD, and the inaugural pop culture and internet-inspired festival, BINGEFEST

“It’s an incredible honour to join the music team at Sydney Opera House,” said Hill. “The Opera House is always evolving and there have been many times over the years where I’ve felt surprised, inspired, and invigorated by what happens on those stages. Ben Marshall has made many of these moments happen and I can’t wait to collaborate with Lisa Montgomery and the team again – who are all creative powerhouses in their own right!”

Alister follows in the footsteps of Chris Twite, who joined the Sydney Opera House Contemporary Music team as Senior Producer in August 2014 after a six-year stint with national promoters Handsome Tours. Chris Twite has joined the Brisbane Festival Programming Team as Contemporary Music Programmer.

Mary J. Blige, Conor Oberst, Warpaint, Kasabian, Andrew Bird and Explosions in the Sky all take to the Concert Hall stage this year, with the line-up for Vivid LIVE as part of Vivid Sydney soon to be announced.
