Love List: Disco Music by Marcia Hines

Love List:
Disco music

by Marcia Hines

Love List is our Spotify series where we ask Opera House guests, friends and staff to curate a playlist dedicated to an artist, genre or subject of their choice.

If that’s the way you’d like it (uh huh uh huh), curate the soundtrack of your next house party with selections by original disco diva Marcia Hines.

From auspicious beginnings in Australian productions of HAIR and Jesus Christ Superstar, followed by an acclaimed career as a recording artist and Australian Idol judge, Marcia has cemented her well-deserved place amongst Australian music royalty.

No stranger to the stages of the Sydney Opera House, she returns in December to star in Velvet Rewired - a cabaret ode to discotheque and Studio 54. Here’s a sneak peek of what you can expect from the epic soundtrack.

▷ Disco Inferno - The Trammps

This song evokes many good memories of nights dancing with good friends.

1999 - Prince

Anything by Prince is a groove that I enjoy listening to.

▷ Le Freak - CHIC

This is a great song–once again a fun groove, and showcases the genius of Nike Rogers.

▷ I Feel Love - Donna Summer

This song is just one of many that I enjoy by the late Donna Summer. What a beautiful voice!

▷ I’m So Excited - The Pointer Sisters

Kind of crosses over from rock and roll into disco. Very cool sound that belongs only to these sisters.

▷ Boogie Oogie Oogie - A Taste of Honey

First heard this funky jam when I was living in Los Angeles, what a great bass line!

That’s The Way (I Like It) - KC & The Sunshine Band

I had the pleasure of touring with KC. I’d always sit backstage, to listen and watch KC and his band.

▷ Night Fever from “Saturday Night Fever” - Bee Gees (of course)

The Bee Gees were one of the best disco bands ever. Whenever one of their songs came on the dance floor would be full as. That’s always a good sign.

▷ Billie Jean – Michael Jackson

We’d all wait to see and hear what incredible sounds MJ would dish up for his fans. Not to mention his creative dance moves!

▷ Can’t Get Enough of Your Love – Barry White

Barry was not only funky, he made disco sensual and funky with his arrangements.
