“I will proudly and unapologetically embrace the one part of my identity that I was taught to be silent and shamed about.”
Janet Mock

Change is coming – get with it

Facebook has over sixty options for users' gender; dating app Tinder has nearly forty. The past decade has produced a revolution in attitudes towards gender and identity.

While pop culture figures like Caitlyn Jenner, Laverne Cox and characters in Jill Soloway's Transparent help promote trans visibility, often these narratives lack the nuance and complicated nature of actual lived experience.

Janet Mock is the most influential trans woman working in media, and is using every tool available to her to tell stories that aim to shift and challenge preconceived notions about what's possible for trans people. An HBO documentary, two bestselling memoirs, pop culture cover stories, a beauty column, speaking engagements, essays, social media - she's doing it all, and at the same time, eager to expand beyond her personal experience and share the platform she has built with others in her community who may not be as fortunate.

Join us as Janet reflects on her journey, and challenges what you think you know about identity, about being, about truth.

More about Janet Mock...

Janet describes her lived experiences as a trans woman of colour and draws connections between her life, her work and her overall mission to broaden society's portrait of womanhood. She speaks about the power of storytelling, the history of trans women-led movements, and the personal-political dynamics of visibility. Her memoir, Redefining Realness: My Path to Womanhood, Identity, Love & So Much More debuted on the New York Times Best Sellers List and was praised by Oprah Winfrey.
