the bathroom project

with Trans Pride Australia

Trans Pride Australia called on their members to submit personal experiences of using public bathrooms. A selection of these quotes will be featured on bathroom mirrors throughout the Sydney Opera House at All About Women.

All About Women venues are located within the Sydney Opera House.

"I believe that telling our stories, first to ourselves and then to one another and the world, is a revolutionary act."

Janet Mock

Greater visibility means greater understanding

For most people, the worst thing that can happen in a public bathroom is that the toilet paper's run out, or it smells bad. But for trans, gender diverse and non-binary people, going to the loo is complicated and often dangerous.

From rude looks and hurtful comments to verbal and physical abuse, public bathrooms can be stressful, humiliating or violent, forcing many trans people to avoid the experience altogether and hold it in, or simply stay at home.

Despite this, trans access to public bathrooms has become a highly politicised issue, and the bathrooms themselves are increasingly political spaces. The Trans Pride Australia Bathroom Project invites people to consider the day to day discrimination faced by this section of our community, and confront the ways in which seemingly innocuous, functional spaces can affect people's lives in ways we rarely think about.
