Brodsky's Art of Fugue
A natural curiosity and insatiable desire to explore has propelled the Brodsky Quartet in many artistic directions, placing them at the very forefront of the international chamber music scene. Established in 1972, the Quartet continues to have a rich, varied and exciting musical life with an energy and craftsmanship that has attracted numerous awards and accolades worldwide. The Brodsky’s concerts are always designed to intrigue and seduce, in this case, the quartet explores the art of the fugue, beginning naturally with Bach’s ultimate example, the Art of Fugue and ending with Beethoven’s profound Great Fugue. The Quartet champions the music of Shostakovich, whose Quartet No.8 is the afternoon’s centrepiece. The Brodsky Quartet’s distinctive voices weave a seductive web of sound.

A note from Yarmila Alfonzetti, Series Curator
It’s quite impossible for me to articulate how much I adore this quartet and its individual members. These are four outstanding human beings – witty, charming, equal parts irreverent and deadly serious, intense, worldly and oh so experienced. What the Brodskys don’t know about string quartet music simply isn’t worth knowing. There aren’t enough pages in this brochure for me to share all that I have learnt from spending time with these wonderful musicians, but I will be forever grateful to them for teaching me that music is a story and there is always, always something more to be found behind the notes themselves.
