“Very special lieder singing"
The Guardian
Tenor Ian Bostridge’s distinctively beautiful voice and disarming, direct communication with audiences has made him one of the most revered singers of his generation. His intense interpretations of Romantic song are indispensable, and his many Grammy-nominated recordings are now classics. He has portrayed iconic roles in operas old and new, and collaborated with the world’s greatest orchestras, conductors and soloists from the classical and jazz worlds. To round out his already considerable achievements he’s also an award-winning author. Bostridge revisits his heartland, German lieder – the mercurially emotive song cycles of Robert Schumann, stories of love and longing, where the stakes are nothing less than life and death. Stunning pianist Saskia Giorgini also offers solo works inspired by overwhelming love by Liszt and Wagner.

Following your concert, share an intimate ‘behind the scenes’ experience with our Utzon Music Series artists.
With a deep and unrivaled knowledge of his craft, Ian Bostridge, joined by Saskia Giorgini, will train an early career musician through the beauty and complexity of Lied repertoire, offering a rare insight for audiences.
The Utzon Music Series Masterclasses are enabled by Jillian Segal AM and John Roth through the Yarranabbe Foundation.
There is nothing like being taken by the metaphorical hand of someone with the experience of Ian Bostridge and then being lead through the canon of German art song. It’s akin to being told about a novel by the author, or being shown through a gallery by the painter. One can’t help feeling the presence of authority and authenticity – an interpretation which comes only after years of study and deep understanding. I have had the great fortune of hearing Ian perform live on numerous occasions, not least of which was his Australian debut in this very Series many years ago, and the control and austerity with which he performs this repertoire is without doubt something unmissable.
