Great style and thrilling virtuosity

The Sydney Morning Herald

A whirlwind emotional journey encapsulating the arc of life

Andrea Lam returns to the Sydney Opera House with a program that explores the emotional range of the piano, from tender introspection to turbulent virtuosity. It explores the cycle and arc of life - with its joys, its challenges, its pleasures, and its pain. Deeply personal statements from the composers reflect on life’s phases -  childhood, an emotionally charged reaction to war and adulthood, and lastly reflections from late adulthood, ending in the lament of the dead.

Mystical timeless chant begins out of silence with Arvo Pärt’s Für Alina, which flows into Schumann’s poetic vignettes on childhood. Prokofiev’s Sonata No. 6, the first of the “war” sonatas, explores the conflict between the individual and fate. It is full of turbulent energy and anxiety concordant with the political tensions of war. Brahms’ autumnal ‘treasures’ of the soul closes with another chant, Dies Irae, the Latin hymn for the dead.

Sydney Opera House Presents

Andrea is at once a poised, articulate and deeply emotive pianist. Her energy is infectious, her technique flawless and her insights always shared with charm and generosity. I'm a shameless, self-confessed Lam Fan, and will be cheering when she takes the stage to perform with her usual finesse and firepower.
