Dance Rites 2019

Rhyan Clapman, aka DOBBY, is a drapper - a rapper and a drummer. A proud Filipino and Aboriginal artist, he uses hip hop as a tool to express knowledge, culture, identity and family.

On the Forecourt

DOBBY combines stories and experiences from his culture to create rap that is powerful, contagious and unforgettable. His family is from Brewarrina on Ngemba land, and he is a member of the Murrawarri Republic in Weilmoringle, NSW.

Musically trained, he studied Aboriginal hip hop at UNSW. He has performed as a rapper and drummer for BIGSOUND 2017/18, The Plot Festival, Yabun Festival, Koori Radio events and at NAIDOC celebrations across Australia. He recently spoke on a panel as part of VIVID Sydney’s VIVID Ideas Exchange. DOBBY is also a rapper and drummer for Sydney band Jackie Brown Jr, and co-hosts a hip hop show on FBi Radio.

His first EP, eponymously titled DOBBY, was released in 2018.

“Hip hop is a conduit to your story, and your own expression of self. No one can take that story away from you, especially when you shout those words out over a beat that leaves people dancing all night. Your entire story in 16 bars, 32 bars, it reaches their ears. That’s your time, no one else’s.” - DOBBY

Presented by the Sydney Opera House.
