“The most feel-good party to have hit Vivid….”
The AU Review

Sydney’s favourite queer party is back to vibe

It’s back! After shaking Vivid LIVE in 2011, 2013, 2018 and its first open-air incarnation in 2019, Sydney alternative queer institution Club Kooky sheds the 2021 blues and shimmies back onto the Northern Broadwalk for their biggest celebration yet.

This year’s event promises even more surprises, with iconic LGBTQIA+ anthems, secret special guest performers, amazing visuals and an inclusive, queer-friendly vibe.

A Sydney queer culture mainstay since the ’90s, Club Kooky has gone from an underground club night to taking over harbourside events, inner west spaces, and legendary Vivid LIVE parties in the Sydney Opera House Studio. Kooky continues to dazzle generations of queer-friendly partygoers with its celebration of freaky, glittery, utterly irresistible abandon.

Bags will be scanned by an x-ray machine, and staff will wear appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) when handling your belongings, such as gloves. Please travel lightly and do not bring items that require cloaking e.g. handbags bigger than A4-size, backpacks and umbrellas, which are not permitted inside our venues.

Will cloaking be available?

Will there be food and beverages available for purchase in the venue?

Foyers will be open 60 minutes pre-show for Joan Sutherland Theatre performances, and two hours pre-show for Western Foyer venue performances. Refreshments will be available for purchase from our theatre bars.

The venue doors will be open 45 minutes pre-show for Joan Sutherland Theatre performances, and 30 minutes pre-show for Western Foyer venue performances.

Only tickets purchased by authorised agencies should be considered reliable. Will the event go ahead if it’s raining?

Vivid LIVE is an all-weather event. Visitors are encouraged to check the weather and come prepared.

This event is taking place outdoors so we recommend you dress appropriately for the weather. Umbrellas are not permitted for any ticketholders attending performances on the Northern Broadwalk. We encourage ticketholders to bring their own ponchos and raincoats.

Except in circumstances beyond our control, this event will proceed rain or shine.

Can I bring a chair with me?

Chairs are not permitted at the Opera House. Further information about items that are prohibited onsite can be found on our Conditions of Entry.

Can I smoke at the Opera House?

  • The health, safety and wellbeing of everyone at the Sydney Opera House is our top priority. In line with this commitment, the Opera House will become a smoke-free site from Saturday 1 January 2022.
  • By becoming a smoke-free site, the Opera House seeks to reduce exposure to harmful second-hand smoke, as well as minimise the impact of smoking on the environment, including litter and pollution of the surrounding marine environment.

Will my experience be impacted by the Opera House's Renewal works?

In February 2020, the Opera House began major Concert Hall renewal works to transform the world-famous venue for 21st century performances. You can find out more here.

While the Concert Hall is closed, the rest of Opera House will remain open and vibrant, with unmissable performances and experiences across all other venues and the wider precinct.

Guests may experience some noise in foyers and theatres but we are working hard to minimise disruption associated with these important works.

Will the Opera House provide assistance to people with mobility support needs during Vivid Sydney?

There will be a designated viewing area of the Opera House sails situated near the Whalebridge restaurant for accessible-needs patrons. The area offers excellent views of the Lighting of the Sails – a centrepiece of Vivid Sydney – and other harbourside lighting attractions.

For patrons who are blind or have low vision, the Opera House will be hosting two audio-described sessions of this year’s images projected on to the sails. For more information please visit the event page.

A complimentary shuttle bus and buggy service will be in operation during Vivid Sydney. Please contact the Box Office to confirm operating hours on 02 9250 7777.
