Hypnotic, avant garde soul from a genre-defying original
After thrilling audiences with his performances at the Concert Hall in 2018, Ghanaian-raised, Los Angeles-based singer-songwriter Moses Sumney returns to the Sydney Opera House for Vivid LIVE, bringing his singular brand of avant garde soul to the Joan Sutherland Theatre for one night only.
Sumney’s gorgeous, vulnerable live performance will draw upon his hugely acclaimed 2020 release græ, an audacious double album of acoustic soul, art rock, jazz, and orchestral pop unified by otherworldly vocals that range from whispers to celestial falsettos. Described by Pitchfork as a record of “artful lyricism, conceptual depth, playful vocals and melodies, unexpected sweeps of soundscape”, it’s poised to cement the multi-instrumentalist as one of the most arresting artists of the moment. He’ll also perform tracks from his 2021 concert album and film, the sprawling, conceptually ambitious Live from Blackalachia.
An eclectic, gifted musician raised between Ghana and his home in California, Sumney broke out with his dazzling debut Aromanticism (2017), which drew comparisons to everyone from Prince and Jeff Buckley to Nina Simone, and has collaborated with Sufjan Stevens (on the smash 'Make Out in My Car'), James Blake, and Beck, alongside appearing on Solange’s A Seat at the Table.
