Slow down, observe...
Create a range of drawings inspired by one of the world's most iconic buildings.
Once a month join like-minded creative souls to explore the Opera House and its surroundings through the eyes of an artist. Working with a different artist each month, explore various drawing techniques, and perspectives inspired by one of the world's most iconic buildings.
You will also learn from an expert Tour Guide about the influence of visual arts in the Opera House history, including the beautiful tapestries that grace our venues and foyer spaces.
Drawing is practical as an architectural and engineering blueprint, but it is also a tool for creative expression and making meaning, visually documenting what we see or imagine on paper, for others to view, interpret and enjoy.
From the very beginning, drawings have played a significant role in the Opera House’s history – a global architectural competition saw entries from all over the world, where a relatively unknown Danish architect, Jorn Utzon, became the winner of a new National Opera House for Sydney. Utzon’s original and somewhat controversial design was an imaginative sculptural response that the judges were convinced would be ‘capable of becoming one of the great buildings of the world’.

Meet the Artists
Awkar Ruel
29 Jan & 26 Feb
Awkar Ruel is an Architect at Grimshaw Architectural Firm and was the recipient of a travel scholarship to Copenhagen as part of a specially chosen group of students to undertake a six-week Multidisciplinary Australian Danish Exchange program, funded through the Opera House’s philanthropy program. Ruel believes multidisciplinary design is critical as it leads to unique solutions that would never be reached unless architects, engineers and designers come together.
Todd Fuller
26 Mar, 30 Apr & 28 May
Todd Fuller's practice integrates sculpture, moving image, performance and painting but at the core to all he does is drawing. For ten years, Fuller has been crafting hand-drawn animations that grapple with love and loss, as well as ideas of place, identity and community. Often narrative in form, these award winning works are derived from Fuller’s experiences with different communities, sites and histories. He has been awarded a number of residencies that have informed and developed his practice, including time spent at Bundanon Trust, Hill End, Grafton Regional Art Gallery, as well as international stints at the Cite Internationale des Arts in Paris, the British School of Rome, and recently the NG Creative Residency in Provence.

It’s a great idea to arrive early, grab a drink and soak up the view. Please arrive 15 minutes before your tour to allow sufficient time to cloak all your bags and personal belongings.
This should allow enough time for the mandatory visual inspections and/or cloaking of all bags and personal belongings by Opera House staff before starting your tour.
Where possible, please leave bags at home. Please note we are unable to cloak bags larger than A4 size.

Will my experience be impacted by the Opera House's Renewal works?
In February 2020, the Opera House began major Concert Hall renewal works to transform the world-famous venue for 21st century performances. You can find out more here.
While the Concert Hall is closed, the rest of Opera House will remain open and vibrant, with unmissable performances and experiences across all other venues and the wider precinct.
Guests may experience some noise in foyers and theatres but we are working hard to minimise disruption associated with these important works.
