Women of Australian Film

A Video Essay

Women have been an integral part of Australian film history from the beginning. In this video essay, edited by Ivana Brehas and commissioned by the Sydney Opera House for All About Women, we unpack five overlooked works from key women of Australian cinema.

Films featured:

  • The Cheaters (1929) - dir. Paulette McDonagh
  • On Guard (1984) - dir. Susan Lamber
  • Night Cries: A Rural Tragedy (1990) - dir. Tracey Moffat
  • Only the Brave (1994) - dir. Anna Kokkinos
  • Floating Life (1996) - dir. Clara Law
