Vivid LIVE goes Carbon Neutral

In 2018 the Opera House became a certified carbon neutral organisation in accordance with the National Carbon Offset Standard (NCOS). In addition to this certification for the fifth consecutive year, the carbon emissions from Vivid LIVE 2019 will be offset as part of our ongoing commitment to reducing environmental impact of Vivid LIVE.

Reduce

A number of green initiatives will be put into practice at this year’s Vivid LIVE:

Thinking outside the bottle: 200 artists and crew will receive reusable water bottles rather than bottled water – saving an estimated 6,000 plastic water bottles across the event. Patrons are encouraged to BYO water bottles and keep cups to reduce their personal footprint as much as possible while enjoying the festival.

Reducing food waste to landfill: Following a successful Vivid LIVE 2015 pilot project providing surplus edible food to the food-rescue charity OzHarvest. Alongside these food donations, all non-edible food waste from Opera House restaurants will be sent to Earth Power – a facility that produces electricity and fertilizer from the food waste.

We have been working to reduce single use plastic on site during festivals, events and performances on site. Following the successful trial of Globelet reusable drinkware in 2018 and early this year, we will introduce a returnable drinkware system for the first time during Vivid Live 2019.  Since introducing this initiative we have saved over 10,000 plastic cups ending up in landfill.

Track and offset

We will track and offset all carbon emissions during Vivid LIVE including flights for performers, artist transport, catering, hotel accommodation, waste and paper. Following the success of last year’s event, staff and audience travel will be estimated as part of the footprint. 100% of the carbon generated from Vivid LIVE will be offset via the purchase of certified carbon credit and reported on the Opera House website.
