Six live performances where Jill Scott killed it

It can take a live show to show off what a real artist can do. For Ms. Jill Scott, the stage has always been a place to experiment with how she, and her band, interprets her own songs.

These are six live moments through the decades where Ms. Jill Scott killed it on stage.

See her perform at Vivid LIVE from Friday 22 May to Tuesday 26 May for the 20th anniversary of Who Is Jill Scott?

‘You Got Me’ with Erykah Badu and the Roots

In 2004, Jill jumped on-stage at Dave Chappelle’s Block Party, the iconic city shutdown that made it as a cult film. She performed with Erykah Badu and The Roots for a brooding version of ‘You Got Me’, a song that she originally wrote for the band.

‘Proud Mary’ with Aretha Franklin, Patti LaBelle, Janelle Monáe, Tessanne Chin, Melissa Etheridge and Ariana Grande

During his time in office, Barack Obama invited legends, living and old, to perform at the White House. Each singer had their time to belt out their greatest hits, but it was a performance of ‘Proud Mary’ led by Ms. Scott with Patti LaBelle, Tessanne Chin, Aretha Franklin, Melissa Etheride, Ariana Grande and Janelle Monáe that stole the show.

‘You Got Me’ with The Roots live in France

In 1999, a young Jill stepped up with The Roots to perform the hit she originally wrote live on TV in France (Erykah originally recorded vocals for the studio album’s version).

A big band swing take on ‘Golden’

A mark of any great jazz standard is that it can be reinvented over and over again. In Paris at the Elysée-Montmartre, Scott and her band played a version of the Beautifully Human single that ran for a minute and a half before switching up and the hi-hats kicked into swing. Jill even channelled Ella and the spirit of scat in her vocals—and in real jazz fashion they continued to jam on that groove for another ten minutes.

A romantic orchestral take on ‘He Loves Me’

In this rare recording for Chicago’s WGN TV, Ms. Jill Scott performed the classic ‘He Loves Me’ like never before with a rousing orchestral arrangement that conjures the album's original sound, and moments of opera that would send shivers down anyone’s spine.

The entire room at the NAACP awards singing along to ‘Is It The Way’

Earlier this year, Ms. Jill Scott had the whole room singing with her as the first performer up at the NAACP Image Awards. If you’re wondering whether she’s still got it, yes, she’s still got it.

Jill Scott is the first artist to be announced for Vivid LIVE this year.
