In 2004, Jill jumped on-stage at Dave Chappelle’s Block Party, the iconic city shutdown that made it as a cult film. She performed with Erykah Badu and The Roots for a brooding version of ‘You Got Me’, a song that she originally wrote for the band.
‘Proud Mary’ with Aretha Franklin, Patti LaBelle, Janelle Monáe, Tessanne Chin, Melissa Etheridge and Ariana Grande
During his time in office, Barack Obama invited legends, living and old, to perform at the White House. Each singer had their time to belt out their greatest hits, but it was a performance of ‘Proud Mary’ led by Ms. Scott with Patti LaBelle, Tessanne Chin, Aretha Franklin, Melissa Etheride, Ariana Grande and Janelle Monáe that stole the show.
A mark of any great jazz standard is that it can be reinvented over and over again. In Paris at the Elysée-Montmartre, Scott and her band played a version of the Beautifully Human single that ran for a minute and a half before switching up and the hi-hats kicked into swing. Jill even channelled Ella and the spirit of scat in her vocals—and in real jazz fashion they continued to jam on that groove for another ten minutes.
In this rare recording for Chicago’s WGN TV, Ms. Jill Scott performed the classic ‘He Loves Me’ like never before with a rousing orchestral arrangement that conjures the album's original sound, and moments of opera that would send shivers down anyone’s spine.
