Sydney Opera House launches unique opportunity for young NSW filmmakers

Sydney - Friday, 24 March 2017. Raising the next Jane Campion? Bringing up a budding Spielberg? Have a future Oscar winner in your midst?

The Sydney Opera House’s inaugural filmmaking competition, Film School, is seeking submissions for original and imaginative storytelling from NSW school students aged 12-18.

To apply, students are encouraged to submit their best storytelling ideas in the form of a synopsis of the film as well as a sample of creative writing. The film can be anything you like: action, adventure, sci-fi, romance, comedy or any combination of genres. If you can imagine it, submit it!

Committed to the fostering of the next generation of creative and artistic talent, Film School will enable the Sydney Opera House to champion and mentor young, aspiring filmmakers as well as give them a public platform to tell their stories.

A judging panel of industry experts will select three winners based on the creativity of the submission. These three winners will be assigned their own industry mentor and be awarded the chance to have their film concepts made a reality through financial, technical and creative leadership support. The Opera House will also stage a series of masterclasses – for the three winners and up to eight runners-up – to further foster the talents of aspiring filmmakers and create connections for them to learn from the best in the field.

The three winners of the inaugural Film School competition will have their works screened at the Sydney Opera House as part of the Little Big Shots film festival in September. Presented by the Sydney Opera House for more than a decade, Little Big Shots is an international kids film festival that showcases children’s films alongside professional and emerging adult filmmakers from over 20 countries.

Children, Families and Creative Learning Senior Producer and Film School Judge, Jamie Dawson, said: “Discovering the next generation of creative talent and helping make their ideas a reality is what the Opera House is all about. I’m thrilled to be launching a truly accessible competition to inspire young minds through the power of storytelling and filmmaking. Partnering with Little Big Shots creates an incredible opportunity for budding filmmakers to participate in our industry in such an exciting and supportive way.”

Little Big Shots Festival Director and Film School Judge, Ben Laden, said: “Working with the Sydney Opera House to bring the world of filmmaking to young people is always a pleasure and partnering on this new project to support the next generation of creators is truly exciting. It will be a great honour to premiere the resulting films at Little Big Shots Sydney this year and I look forward to meeting the bright young minds this competition will unearth!”
