Completed Projects - Vehicle Access and Pedestrian Safety

In 2016 the Vehicle Access and Pedestrian Safety (VAPS) project was completed, removing more than 1,000 heavy-vehicle movements a week from the Forecourt and diverting them to a new tunnel and underground loading dock. The project has improved the safety of pedestrians and returned this magnificent space to the tens of thousands of people who approach the Opera House every day with a sense of awe.

For the first time, the Forecourt has become the great open piazza that Utzon envisaged.

In addition to the construction of the tunnel and loading dock, the VAPS project included the diversion of the Bennelong Drain, the replacing of the Forecourt’s granite cobblestones and the raising of the existing roadway to create a level surface across the site. The project began in 2011 and at the time was the largest single capital works program undertaken at the Sydney Opera House since its opening in 1973. It has helped to enable the broader range of Renewal works.
