A day at the Opera House 

Tours and Workshop package for schools 

Spend the day immersed in the stories, history and creativity of the Sydney Opera House when you pair a Schools Tour with a First Nations or STEAM Creative Learning Workshop.

You will have the opportunity to visit some of the Opera House’s many venues and theatres however please note the Concert Hall is currently closed as it is undergoing renewal works to improve theatre machinery, acoustics and accessibility.  Click here to learn more about the Concert Hall renewal works.

COVID-safe tour information

The health, safety and wellbeing of everyone at the Opera House is our priority. When you return to the Opera House, you will notice some important changes that have been implemented to keep the community safe, which are regularly reviewed and updated in consideration of the Public Health Order prevailing at the time. Please follow our conditions of entry at all times:

  • Face masks are strongly recommended for all patrons while inside our theatres and foyers, including during a performance and on a tour. Please bring your own mask;
  • As you move around the Opera House, practise physical distancing (1.5 metres whenever possible) and follow the guidance provided by our staff and signage; and
  • Within venues, always take your allocated seat.

Please refer to our updated General Terms and Conditions for Tickets and Attendance at Events for detailed information about our ticketing policies. These conditions may change between the time of purchase and the event date. Ticketholders will be contacted directly regarding any changes to their event.

Suitable for Years K - 9

The school tour is tailored for primary students. 

Capacity per tour is 15 students with 1 teacher per group. 
Capacity per workshop is 25-30 students with 2 teachers per group. 
Multiple groups can be accommodated.

Running time approximately 3.5 hours including breaks

The Tour is 60 minutes, followed by a 90 minute workshop.

Event duration is a guide only and may be subject to change.

Curriculum alignment

Each Schools Tour and Creative Learning Module is devised to align with the Australian National Curriuclum cross-cirricula priorties and general capabilities, in particular critical and creative thinking, ethical understanding, intercultural understanding, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Histories and Culture priority and Sustainability priorities.

The Schools Tour incorporates a creative learning approach to guiding students on a journey throughout the Opera House and includes performative activities, games and reflection questions, while the Creative Learning Modules align lateral thinking and creative learning approaches to expand traditional ideas of STEM through practical, real-world examples and ideas.

Are you a COVID Safe business?

Yes. The Opera House is registered as a COVID Safe business with the NSW Government.  

What safety and hygiene measures are in place?

Nothing is more important to us than the health and safety of everyone on site, and we are closely following NSW Health guidelines and advice. Our COVID-19 health and safety information is available on the Plan your visit page.

Do I need to be vaccinated to visit the Sydney Opera House?

The Sydney Opera House no longer requires patrons to show that they are fully vaccinated against COVID-19. 

Am I required to wear a mask?

Face masks are strongly recommended for all patrons while inside our theatres and foyers, including during a performance and on a tour. Please bring your own mask.

What happens if I can't make my tour?

Please contact our Tourism Reservations team on 02 9250 7250 as soon as possible to advise if you can no longer attend. If you can no longer attend because you are unwell, or have been in contact with someone displaying COVID-19 symptoms, the Opera House has introduced flexible ticketing options to help you.

Where is the closest location for bus parking and drop off?

The closest location to disembark from buses and coaches is on Macquarie Street. Please contact City of Sydney to confirm bus and coach set down areas. We recommend allowing an additional 10 minutes for walking from Macquarie Street. There is no bus parking onsite at Sydney Opera House. 

What are the transport options to the Opera House?

Circular Quay is the closest station for public transport via train, bus and ferry. We recommend allowing 15 minutes to walk from Circular Quay for school groups. To view timetable information and ensure your public transport needs can be met, please contact Transport NSW. Please check the Transport NSW website for the latest advice and information on COVID-19 safety measures for public transport.

Is there storage for school bags?

The safety and security of everyone visiting our site is paramount. We require all items larger than the dimensions of an A4 piece of paper to be cloaked. As our cloakrooms have limited space, we request that where possible teachers and students do not bring large bags/backpacks with them to the performance.

Will we go inside all the theatres on the tour?

You will have the opportunity to visit some of the Opera House’s many venues and theatres on this tour.

Please note that as we are a busy performing arts centre, venues and theatres are subject to availability at the time of your tour. 

The Concert Hall is currently closed for renewal works to improve theatre machinery, acoustics and accessibility.

Will the building works at the Opera House affect the tour?

You'll notice that Sydney Opera House has building works underway around the precinct. These works will not impact your visit, it's business as usual!

Do ensure that you arrive at the Sydney Opera House at least 15 minutes before your tour to allow sufficient time to cloak any bags and personal belongings.

What time do I need to arrive before my tour?

We recommend your group arrives early at the venue, at least 15 minutes prior to your tour start time at the Welcome Centre.

This should allow enough time for the mandatory visual inspections and/or cloaking of bags and personal belongings by Opera House staff before starting your tour.
