Meet the cast
Andreas Denk is a German choreographer, dancer and theatre maker based in the Netherlands. He is the founder and artistic director of Plan d-, an internationally touring dance theatre company known for creating imaginative, accessible and visually inventive performances for audiences of all ages.
A graduate of the Lola Rogge School in Hamburg and the Rotterdam Dance Academy, Andreas has worked extensively across Europe as a performer, choreographer and artistic director. His work has been presented at numerous international festivals and theatres, and he has received several prestigious awards for choreography, scenography and film.
At the heart of his artistic practice is a fascination with everyday objects and materials. By transforming ordinary items into playful theatrical partners, he creates performances that are surprising, humorous and deeply human. His work often explores themes of connection, belonging, sustainability and inclusion, inviting audiences to see the world from a different perspective.
Ali Shafiee is an Iranian-Dutch actor, theatre maker, director and drama teacher. Born in Iran in 1970, he developed a passion for theatre at a young age. Because professional theatre training was not accessible to Deaf people at the time, he initially studied electrical engineering before fleeing to the Netherlands in 1994.
In the Netherlands he found a new artistic home at Handtheater, where he performed with Deaf and sign-language-speaking actors. Alongside his work in education, he continued performing and later completed his qualification as a drama teacher.
Ali’s work is characterised by expressive physicality, visual storytelling and humour. Drawing on his own experiences as a Deaf performer and refugee, he is passionate about creating inclusive spaces where communication extends beyond spoken language. Through theatre and education, he encourages understanding, self-confidence and connection between people from different backgrounds.
Chérif Zaouali is a Dutch-Belgian choreographer, performer, facilitator and founder of Shiva Rising, a movement-based company creating transformative experiences through performance, somatics and human connection. With more than 25 years of international experience in theatre, dance, film, television and immersive performance, he combines artistic practice with emotional awareness and embodied storytelling.
He has performed and collaborated with companies including Danstheater AYA, ISH Dance Collective, Movementalist and André Gingras, and currently works with Plan d- on participatory and site-specific productions. His work explores themes of identity, belonging, resilience and collective experience.
Through movement, improvisation and audience engagement, Chérif creates spaces where people can connect across differences and discover new ways of relating to themselves and others. His artistic practice is rooted in accessibility, inclusion and the belief that performance can be a catalyst for meaningful human connection.
About Plan d-
Choreographer, dancer and set designer Andreas Denk creates professional dance theatre for both children and adults. He draws inspiration from stories about people and special places, making performances that are instantly recognisable for the way they reveal the absurdity of situations that contemporary human beings find themselves in.
Objects and the settings in which he places his performers are of crucial importance. Plan d- offers a space — both literally and figuratively — in which everyone is free to tell their own personal story. In this way, Denk introduces audiences to existential spaces and invites them to explore corners of the world they would not normally encounter. He hopes this will inspire us to see the world around us differently, and to find perspective on the more difficult aspects of contemporary life.
Andreas Denk approaches the tragic always with absurd humour, drawing audiences in and keeping them emotionally engaged. Plan d- makes compelling dance theatre for a wide audience, children and adults alike.
