Following his American debut My Blueberry Nights, Wong Kar Wai turned his focus to a 1930s wuxia epic about the philosophies, traditions and legends of the martial arts world.

With his eyes set on mainstream audiences, WKW cast Tony Leung Chiu-wai (In The Mood For Love, Infernal Affairs) and Zhang Ziyi (Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon, Memoirs of a Geisha) in lead roles, and took home a record breaking 12 Hong Kong Film Awards, the most wins for any film in its history.

In 1930s China, Ip Man is celebrated as the grandmaster of Wing Chun. During a competition, he wins the affection of Gong Er, a master of the northern Chinese martial arts tradition. But the occupation by Japanese troops separates the two, and they will only meet again after the war ends.

The Grandmaster screens in its original Chinese / Hong Kong theatrical release format, at 130 minutes, dubbed The Extended Cut.
