Inventor of the World Wide Web

Over thirty years ago, computer scientist Sir Tim Berners-Lee invented the World Wide Web, revolutionising how we think, write, create and connect with each other. Join us for this rare opportunity to hear from one of the world’s most visionary inventors.

Sir Tim, or TimBL as he is affectionately known in the computer science community, stands in stark contrast to the technology oligarchs we have come to know. Rather than monetizing his revolutionary invention, he gave it to the world, ensuring the World Wide Web would be accessible and free to all, regardless of their hardware, software, or language.

In this Sydney exclusive event, Sir Tim will tell the story of his iconic invention and explore the future of human innovation. Drawing on his new memoir, This is For Everyone, Berners-Lee will explore how the web launched a new era of creativity and collaboration, while unleashing a commercial race that today imperils democracies and polarises public debate.

Sir Tim’s vision spans multiple ethical conversations happening today. He believes that the Web should be accessible to everyone, systems should be open and decentralised, and that individuals – not corporations – should own and control their personal data. In this environment of deep fakes and division turbo-charged by AI, can we recapture the spirit of individual empowerment and creative collaboration spurred by Sir Tim’s vision for the web?

Hear him discuss all that was and all there is to come in this Sydney exclusive event.

Presented by Sydney Opera House and the University of Sydney
