Witch house, dark grooves and sinister dream-pop from music’s cult underground

SALEM is a music group from the American Midwest. They inhabit the world of their music: the darkness, the struggle and the triumph. Their sound is blurry and hypnotic, caught between the spiritual and the material, existing in a world entirely its own with no clear peers or precedent.

Returning to curate what has quickly become one of Vivid LIVE’s most unmissable events, Sydney musician, poet and artist 3NDLES5 – aka Mitch Tolman from cult punks LOW LIFE – has put together another gorgeously unsettling line-up of sinister sounds from the musical dark side.

This year, the city’s underground prince of chaos brings us the Australian-exclusive off-off debut of the almost-mythical SALEM, the Michigan band whose singular fusion of electronics, dark ambient, trap, hip-hop and shoegaze saw them dubbed the pioneers of witch house. Mixing delicate electro textures with hard-hitting Southern rap, their debut album King Night (2010) remains anything else in music; its long-awaited follow up Fires in Heaven (2020), saw the band enter a new phase and in 2025 the rarely-seen SALEM made an unlikely – and breathlessly triumphant – return to live performance at Primavera Sound Barcelona.

Joining SALEM is London rapper Jawnino, an artist whose hidden identity is as mysterious as his music is distinctive. Combining bass-driven grime, jungle, dream-pop and gauzy cloud rap with his raspy, cooly delivered freestyles, Jawnino’s sound has seen him become one of the hottest names in the UK rap underground.
