Experience ancient Persian musical tradition in the hands of a modern master

Award-winning Persian-Australian composer and tar player Hamed Sadeghi is renowned for his distinctive approach to unconventional instrumentation, placing the tar at the heart of his work. In this special recital, he performs solo, offering an intimate celebration of his cultural heritage in its purest form.

The long-necked plucked tar is perhaps the most emblematic solo instrument of Persian culture. In the Utzon Room, Sadeghi will embrace its lyrical and resonant tonality as he draws upon the Radif – the vast canon of melodic frameworks passed down through generations of masters to make up the repertoire of Persian classical music. Weaving improvisation throughout, he brings his unique artistry to an ancient tradition.

Celebrated for his ensemble performances and compositions for theatre, this is a rare opportunity to see Sadeghi performing solo, within arm's reach. Embracing the instrument taught to him in his birthplace of Iran and bringing its expressive potential to his home in Australia, expect an experience that is meditative, intimate, and altogether transportive.
