Shakespeare meets ’90s sass in this rom-com cult classic

United States | 1999 | English | Romantic Comedy | PG

A love letter to Shakespeare’s The Taming of the Shrew, this late 90s classic comedy pitches the bad-boy swagger of Heath Ledger against the smart-ass glare of Julia Stiles in a twisted rom-com for any generation.

“I hate the way I don’t hate you… not even close, not even a little bit…”

On the first day at his new school, Cameron (Joseph Gordon-Levitt) instantly falls for Bianca (Larisa Oleynik), the gorgeous girl of his dreams. The only problem is that Bianca is forbidden to date...until her ill-tempered, completely un-datable older sister Kat (Julia Stiles) goes out, too. In an attempt to solve his problem, Cameron singles out the only guy who could possibly be a match for Kat: a mysterious bad boy (Heath Ledger) with a nasty reputation of his own.

Seemingly against all odds, the act of transporting Shakespeare to an all-American High School lands perfectly in this late 90s teen rom-com charmer, providing the launching pad for the careers of its leads - Ledger, Stiles and Gordon-Levitt. Inspired by the success of Clueless, and the winning character combination of The Breakfast Club, the film has been dubbed one of the best rom-coms of all time by both Vogue and Vanity Fair.
