The cult weirdo sci-fi phenomenon charts the course from teen angst to apocalyptic madness

United States | 2001 | English | Sci-fi/Thriller

Director Richard Kelly’s searing debut earned him countless accolades, and immediately catapulted his outre psychological sci-fi thriller into the realms of bona fide cult classics. 25 years later, it has lost none of its ability to provoke, shock and confound audiences; a glorious, independent masterpiece, luring us into a mad, multi-versal world of apocalyptic angst.

28 days, 6 hours, 42 minutes, 12 seconds… that is when the world will end.

Donnie Darko (Jake Gyllenhaal) is a disturbed adolescent from a semi-functional, upper-middle class family, gifted with a sharp intellect and vivid imagination – but he’s also a bit weird. When his boredom is obliterated in a a bizarre accident involving a falling airline engine, Donnie becomes increasingly delusional and convinced the world will end in 28 days. Plagued by visions of a man in a large rabbit suit, he embarks on an increasingly crazed series of actions, which horrify his teachers, scare his parents and amaze his friends - whilst giving him a tempting power to alter time and destiny.
