A documentary classic, fusing stunning footage with an exhilarating soundtrack from Philip Glass

America | 1982 | Experimental Documentary

Drawing its title from the Hopi word meaning "life out of balance," this renowned documentary reveals how humanity has grown apart from nature. Mapped with an exhilarating minimalist soundtrack by Philip Glass, director Godfrey Reggio’s prescient film weaves extensive footage of natural landscapes and elemental force, with scenes of modern civilisation and technology.

Presented without traditional narration and dialogue, Koyaanisqatsi makes its points dramatically through imagery and music, with many scenes either slowed down or sped up to emphasise its profound message. One of the highest-grossing documentaries of the 1980s, the film was the first of the ‘Qatsi’ trilogy for Reggio, and features cinematography by Ron Fricke, who later directed the much-loved documentary feature Baraka.
