Heroes soar when pigs fly

Japan | 1992 | English (Dubbed) | Fantasy/Adventure | PG

Above the golden waters of the Adriatic, a world-weary pilot cursed with the face of a pig roams the skies in search of lost honour and forgotten dreams. Porco Rosso is Hayao Miyazaki’s wry and wistful tale of love, flight, and the price of staying true to yourself.

In the restless skies of post–World War I Italy, air pirates rule the waves and only one man dares to stand against them. Porco Rosso, a former ace pilot turned bounty hunter, is no ordinary hero: cursed to wear the face of a pig, he’s a legend of the Adriatic, gliding from island to island in his scarlet seaplane with only his wit, his memories, and his sense of honour to guide him. When an arrogant American rival shoots him down, Porco must turn to Fio, a young engineer with fire in her heart, to rebuild his plane and maybe mend his spirit. With dazzling aerial battles, smoky jazz clubs, and a quiet ache beneath its charm, Porco Rosso is a Studio Ghibli classic: part swashbuckler, part elegy, and all heart. Written and directed by Hayao Miyazaki, it’s a story of flying, fading dreams, and the courage it takes to keep going.
