A magnificent concert series featuring musically diverse performances by over 1000 outstanding student musicians and vocalists from NSW public schools and high schools

The Festival of Instrumental Music features musically diverse performances from more than 1000 public school students in Combined Recorder and String Ensembles, supported by individual items from talented vocalists, instrumental soloists and ensembles. The Combined Recorder repertoire includes Rondo by Henry Purcell, Fireflies by Adam Young and Elvenwood by Australian composer Tracy Burjan, to be performed with the Combined Strings. The string repertoire also includes Bushwhacker Stomp by Australian composer Keith Sharp, and The General’s Order, ancient Chinese music arranged by Albert Wang. This Festival will also feature performances from several school and state level ensembles and soloists.

Getting to the venue

The Opera House is a 7-10 minute walk from Circular Quay, and is easily accessible by car, train, ferry, lightrail, bus, bike and on foot.

Location and access

Concert Hall

The Concert Hall is located beneath the largest of Sydney Opera House’s roof sails, filling the upper levels of the west side of the building. Best accessed through the covered concourse. 

All Sydney Opera House foyers are accessible, with lifts to the main and western foyers. The public lift to all foyers is accessible from the corridor near the escalators on the Lower Concourse and also in the Western Foyer via the corridor on the Ground Level (at the top of the escalators).
