German cello star makes his Sydney solo debut

German star Maximilian Hornung is one of the most remarkable cellists on the international stage, renowned for his exceptional technique, extraordinary depth of tone, boundless range of colours and natural sophistication. He makes his Sydney solo recital debut in the intimacy of the Opera House’s Utzon Room with an enchanting program of music for solo cello.

The recital opens with the first and closes with the fifth JS Bach’s Cello Suite, the yardstick against which any great cellist is measured. Between these two masterpieces, Hornung performs German composer Hans Werner Henze’s charming Serenade for Cello and American composer Caroline Shaw’s haunting in manus tuas, based on a 16th-century motet by Thomas Tallis.

Hear this wonderful instrument up close in the hands of an international star.
