Sustainability Tour

Monday 5 June 2023

Stage Door | Industry Tour

Join us on the Sustainability Tour to learn about how we are continuing to embed sustainability principles on and off the stage and how we are supporting the UN Global Goals including Climate Action and Life Below Water.

Sustainability is in the Opera House's DNA. For thousands of years, the Gadigal people would come to Bennelong Point to meet, share stories and music. Their land management ensured the preservation of their food sources. Sydney Opera House architect, Jørn Utzon, incorporated sustainable design elements into the building.

The tour will start by highlighting the intrinsic connections between the Sydney Opera House and the natural environment, from architectural design to sustainable building operations. You'll hear examples of quality design supporting sustainable operation, such as our pioneering seawater cooling system and the Drama Theatre and Concert Hall energy efficiency upgrades. The tour will also take you behind the scenes to see how we are diverting over 85% of our waste away from landfill.

The tour will be led by Environmental Sustainability Manager, Emma Bombonato and Environmental Sustainability Project Coordinator, Amanda Or.
