We want to bring together a Kids Council that reflects a range of children, their interests and their experiences.
When reviewing applications, we will consider:
- Interest in participating: Children who are curious about the world around them and interested in sharing their thoughts and ideas.
- Ideas and perspectives: What children share about creative experiences, what makes them feel welcome, and what they think is important for kids.
- Ways of participating: The different ways children enjoy contributing, whether that’s sharing ideas, listening, asking questions, performing, making things or trying something new.
- A mix of experiences and perspectives: Building a group with a range of ages, interests, backgrounds and experiences.
Children don’t need previous arts experience or experience visiting the Sydney Opera House to apply. There are no right or wrong answers, and we welcome children who express themselves in different ways.
As places are limited, we may not be able to offer a place to every child who applies. Our aim is to bring together a group with a broad range of perspectives and experiences.
The safety and wellbeing of children participating in the Kids Council is a priority for the Sydney Opera House. Read the Sydney Opera House’s Child Safety Policy. The Sydney Opera House has also developed a Child-friendly Code of Conduct to engage with our youngest visitors.

Meet the artists
Matt Kelly
Lead Artist
Matt is a director, writer, and performer who has been cooking up work for children and families for more than 25 years. Beginning his career as a science educator, he brought that same curiosity to theatre-making, developing a reputation as an inventive theatre-maker and professional silly-billy. As a solo artist, he’s made actual musical chairs for Arts Centre Melbourne, an invisible orchestra conducted by babies (Happy Campers), and had his birthday ruined by a sock puppet (Best. Party. Ever.). While best known as one half of award-winning comedy duo The Listies, whose work appears on stage, page, and screen, Matt’s practice spans theatre, podcasts, music and interactive installation, all grounded in play, participation, and joy.
Susie Rugg
Kids Council Facilitator
Susie Rugg is a creative producer, artist educator and founder of Handy with Scissors, with more than 20 years of experience developing and producing arts programs for children and families. Her career has spanned the Sydney Opera House, Museum of Contemporary Art, UTS Library, Art Gallery of NSW, Sydney Festival and independent creative practice. She believes children have the best ideas, that adults should listen to what they have to say, and that children are artists in their own right.
She is passionate about the hands-on act of making and has never met a cardboard box she didn’t like.
