Love & Devotion String Quartets by Haydn, Mozart & Mendelssohn

18 February 2024

In the Utzon Room

Classical Music

Intense and blissful string quartets composed by the masters of the form, played on period instruments by one of Australia’s premier ensembles.

This was superlative playing...creating a blissful afternoon of music in Sydney’s incomparable floating recital venue.

Sounds Like Sydney

Blissful string quartets by some of Australia’s finest.

A program of three immensely satisfying quartets. All have moments of such emotional intensity that they seem to come from a place of deep personal feeling. So is love in the air? The D major is one of Haydn’s most emotional and enjoyable quartets, full of humour and amazing invention, while Mozart’s is written from a place of pure bliss following his marriage. Meanwhile, a young Mendelssohn writes a quartet in honour of the girl next door, who promptly dumps him. The legacy of this doomed affair is a great, glorious, mature work as rich as romantic opera. Played on period instruments (instruments from the times of the composers). An intimate and wonderfully different way to experience this glorious music..

Presented by Australian Haydn Ensemble
