Digital Programming

Sharing Opera House performances and events with the world

Since its inception nearly a decade ago, the Opera House’s digital program has engaged tens of millions of people around the world through livestreams, podcast series, short films and original digital events.

Delivering the unmissable work of Sydney Opera House Presents to the laptops, living rooms and mobile phones of audiences everywhere, the digital program led by Head of Digital Programming Stuart Buchanan delivers high-quality streams and recordings direct from our stages, along with new digital presentations that extend and complement the Opera House’s Artistic Strategy.

Core to Digital Programming is the delivery of Digital Creative Learning to schools and educators around the country, offering free programs of livestreams, interactive workshops, author talks and original content.

Digital Season: From Our House to Yours

Providing a meeting place online for audiences to escape and connect, the From Our House to Yours digital program was created in March 2020 in response to COVID-19 to uplift and inspire audiences while the Opera House was temporarily closed to the public.

The weekly program featured full-length performances and talks, unreleased recordings and never-before-seen footage, as well as new and live-streamed performances from the Joan Sutherland Theatre stage.

The curated weekly program was enthusiastically received with over 6.3 million views and downloads of digital programming and content. This included over 450,000 hours watched, 166,000 podcast listens and 1.5 million views of website content. From Our House to Yours has been vital to maintain the shared experience of attending art and cultural events for online audiences and communities, presenting entertaining, engaging and inspiring online programming whilst supporting the artistic community.

Annual Program

Year-round digital programming extends the reach of onsite performances through new films, digital events, podcasts and original commissions.

In recent years, key programs have included concert films featuring The Cure, Solange, Nick Cave, The Flaming Lips and many more; the Webby Award-winning Seconds To Stage series; the Piano Day 2020 broadcast (featuring premiere performances by Jon Hopkins, Joep Beving, Margaret Leng Tan and more); It’s A Long Story and Deadly Voices podcasts; the VR Creative Learning project Digital Dinos; and Nooks & Crannies, a unique live music series celebrating iconic architecture and artistic expression in unexpected and spectacular unseen spaces inside Sydney Opera House.
